Watermelons and the Time I Got My Hair Did

I realize that watermelons should have absolutely nothing to do with hair.  And really they don’t have anything to do with each other in this post.  That would be gross!

It’s just that I was on Pinterest the other day and saw that someone had pinned “how to cut a watermelon”.  From what I could tell from the picture, it appeared to be the same way that I was taught to cut and cube a melon.  So, I thought to myself… Self, maybe there are others out there that don’t already have a simple way of cutting a watermelon.

And then I decided that I needed to show you.  Just in case YOU are that person that is looking.  And if not, you can marvel at the wonderful hairdo my 6 year old, H, gave me today… Imagine me cutting the watermelon with said hairdo, because I totally did.

And now imagine how hard it was for me to get that angle.  Which is why you also get a lovely view down my back.  And pretend that the dog isn’t in the pic… he’s really not part of my hair.  Oh, and one more thing… imagine a green headband in the front view.  Yeah, I was stylin’.  Except that I had no make-up on… pretend.  {You only get a little pic because I look that good without make-up.}

We’ll now move onto the cutting of a watermelon:

{Note:  There are many ways to cube a watermelon and I am not claiming this one to be the best.  I am only sharing the way that I find to be the simplest for me.  Some of the other tutorials out there are great, I’m sure, but I am too simple minded to figure them out.  THIS I can handle! ;)}

You’ll need the following items…. a watermelon {obviously, right?}, a sharp butcher knife, and a cutting board.

Start by cutting both ends off the watermelon.

Stand it up on one end, like so.

And start shaving the sides off with the knife, starting and the top and curving down toward the bottom.

I always end up having to flip it over because I’m never able to get it all shaved off when that end is on the bottom.

Now cut the melon in half.

Slice from one end to the other about 1-2 inches apart.  {I did mine a little bit large so you could see the detail better.}

Then start slicing the opposite way.

If you like them in ‘tubes’ you can leave them at the length they are.

If you want them as cubes, you can lay each row down on the cutting board and cut through them as big or small as you like.

Repeat with the other half and VOILA!!  Watermelon ‘tubes’ or cubes!

I wanted to reply to your comment on Grammy Goodwill, but you're a no reply blogger. And, believe it or not, I have never ever seen a watermelon cut this way. I am so impressed.

Very impressive angle to take a picture! And I only wish I looked that good without make-up on! :)

Oh, this looks great! You are making me want some watermelon now! I am from the Caribbean island of Jamaica and love watermelons. I have not had any in awhile though! Very interesting. I am happy to become a Follower of your Blog. I learnt about it from the Blog Hop.

This is a new and exciting method for me, though I may have to get a sharper knife. I was using our sharpest knife the other day. It slipped and sliced my finger, only it didn't slice my finger because it wasn't sharp enough. Barely a scratch.
